Zineddine: A young Kabyle assassinated in a military roadblock!

8 February 2008

Who fired the shot? There were only soldiers on the spot. The only witness who accompanied Zineddine says that everything was normal and that this act is not justified. Since then, total silence! Neither the government nor the military would have spoken about this. As if the death of one man was quite normal. The witness also stated that the soldiers who were on site have all refused to assist in transporting the injured to hospital. If this death had to be the result of a lost bullet or a weapon that has triggered alone (We know the story), then all soldiers present on the spot must be condemned for failing to assist a person in danger. How can we not be appalled and hateful toward those authorities of the crime. They have killed and continue to kill. We extend our condolences to the family and friends of the victim and accompany us in this difficult ordeal of death.

Kabylie: another victim of the Algerian authorities

On the evening of January 29 last, the young Zineddine BERREKLA was shot by the soldiers stationed at the checkpoint erected at the crossroads of Assif-Aissi, in the wilaya of Tizi-Ouzou.

The young man, aged 29 years, was returning home by car with a friend. The testimonies claim that it has complied with all the safety rules and precautions (slowdown, extinguishing fires vehicle, etc.) and has advanced only after receiving permission to proceed.

A few meters after suddenly shots were fired by the soldiers towards the driver of the vehicle, hit in the head. The soldiers then refused to call an ambulance to transport the injured to hospital. It died a few moments later.

No explanation was provided by the military and civilian authorities regarding this act which is a real murder.

In a state of shock, parents and people wonder about the reasons for this new crime perpetrated by the Algerian security services. Could this be a new provocation with the aim to raise the Kabylie and to proceed as in the 2001 black spring carnage (125 dead)? Or maybe an additional warning to Kabyle to cease to denounce abuses of power and accept the bid?

For the Amazigh World Congress, the assassination of Zineddine Berrekla is one of the consequences of the strategy of chaos that the Algerian government has been pursuing in Kabylia. Under the pretext of fighting against Islamists and insecurity they promoted themself, the Algerian authorities in Kabylia has installed a repressive military-widely disproportionate (police, gendarmerie, army), making this region the area most militarized in Algeria. For Kabyle populations, Algerian security services are not a protection force but of occupation one.

The disregard for the lives, particularly when this life is Kabyle, is encouraged by impunity that protects the murderers and their hierarchy. So far, the victims of black spring of 2001 er still waiting for justice.

The Amazigh World Congress shares the grief of the family Berrekla and pledged his solidarity. He strongly condemns this heinous act and calls for an independent inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the assassination of Zineddine, the trial and exemplary punishment of the perpetrator.

In addition, the CMA claims:

— The departure of the algerian police and army from Kabylia ,

— Strong international pressure (particularly from the UN and the EU) on the Algerian government to immediately cease its genocidal policy in Kabylia.

Stuck between the anvil of Islamism and the hammer of the Algerian authorities, Kabylia risk to explode at any time with unpredictable consequences. To each, at the national and international levels, must assume its responsibilities.
